Year of the Reaper
The past never forgets . . .

Before an ambush by enemy soldiers, Lord Cassia was an engineer’s apprentice on a mission entrusted by the king. But when plague sweeps over the land, leaving countless dead and devastating the kingdom, even Cas’ title cannot save him from a rotting prison cell and a merciless sickness.

Three years later, Cas wants only to return to his home in the mountains and forget past horrors. But home is not what he remembers. His castle has become a refuge for the royal court. And they have brought their enemies with them.

When an assassin targets those closest to the queen, Cas is drawn into a search for a killer…one that leads him to form an unexpected bond with a brilliant young historian named Lena. Cas and Lena soon realize that who is behind the attacks is far less important than why. They must look to the past, following the trail of a terrible secret—one that could threaten the kingdom’s newfound peace and plunge it back into war.

Autumn's Tithe (The Severed Realms Trilogy, #1)

Every girl in Ballamor dreams of being chosen by the fey. For some, because the fey promise to deliver them to the beautiful faery realm. For Larken, because her closest friend was chosen the previous year. She tries to accept her fate—until she discovers that her friend is in danger and the promise of eternal joy amongst the fey could be a lie.

Larken breaks the sacred covenant between humans and fey and enters the faery realm to find her friend. Her only ally is Finder, a faery prince of the Autumn Court who now owes her a debt after she unwittingly saves his life. Their bond is both the key to her survival… and possibly her downfall.

Underneath the glittering façade of the faery realm seethes a shadowy pact writ in blood, betrayal, and lust for power at any cost. A tithe must be paid by each of the courts of Airodion. Both Finder and Larken’s people face retribution if the tithe goes unpaid, and their bond could destroy the foundation of the courts—and the human world—forever.

Pestilence (The Four Horsemen, #1)

They came to earth–Pestilence, War, Famine, Death–four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she’ll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

Caffeine and Legends

The Boy with Fire (The Ravence Trilogy #1)

Yassen Knight was the Arohassin’s most notorious assassin until a horrible accident. Now, he’s on the run from the authorities and his former employer. But when Yassen seeks refuge with an old friend, he’s offered an irresistible deal: defend the heir of Ravence from the Arohassin, and earn his freedom.

Elena Ravence prepares to ascend the throne. Trained since birth in statecraft, warfare, and the desert ways, Elena knows she is ready. She only lacks one thing: the ability to hold Fire. With the coronation only weeks away, she must learn quickly or lose her kingdom.

Leo Ravence is not ready to give up the crown. There’s still too much work to be done, too many battles to be won. But when an ancient prophecy threatens to undo his lifetime of work, Leo wages war on the heavens themselves to protect his legacy.

The first of The Ravence Trilogy, The Boy with Fire is the tale of a world teetering on the edge of war and prophecy, of fate and betrayal, of man’s irrevocable greed for power — and the sacrifices that must come with it.

Dark and Shimmer

A Lesson in Vengeance

Felicity Morrow is back at Dalloway School.

Perched in the Catskill mountains, the centuries-old, ivy-covered campus was home until the tragic death of her girlfriend. Now, after a year away, she’s returned to graduate. She even has her old room in Godwin House, the exclusive dormitory rumored to be haunted by the spirits of five Dalloway students—girls some say were witches. The Dalloway Five all died mysteriously, one after another, right on Godwin grounds.

Witchcraft is woven into Dalloway’s history. The school doesn’t talk about it, but the students do. In secret rooms and shadowy corners, girls convene. And before her girlfriend died, Felicity was drawn to the dark. She’s determined to leave that behind her now; all Felicity wants is to focus on her senior thesis and graduate. But it’s hard when Dalloway’s occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won’t let her forget.

It’s Ellis Haley’s first year at Dalloway, and she’s already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is a so-called “method writer.” She’s eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can’t shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity for help researching the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can’t say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource.

And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway–and in herself.

You Got Anything Stronger?: Stories

Remember when we hit it off so well that we decided We’re Going to Need More Wine? Well, this time you and I are going to turn to our friend the bartender and ask, You Got Anything Stronger? I promise to continue to make you laugh, but with this round, the stakes get higher as the conversation goes deeper.
So. Where were we?

Right, you and I left off in October 2017, when my first book came out. The weeks before were filled with dreams of loss. Pets dying. My husband leaving me. Babies not being born. My therapist told me it was my soul preparing for my true self to emerge after letting go of my grief. I had finally spoken openly about my fertility journey. I was having second thoughts—in fact, so many thoughts they were organizing to go on strike. But I knew I had to be honest because I didn’t want other women going through IVF to feel as alone as I did. I had suffered in isolation, having so many miscarriages that I could not give an exact number. Strangers shared their own journeys and heartbreak with me. I had led with the truth, and it opened the door to compassion.

When I released We’re Going to Need More Wine, the response was so great people asked when I would do a sequel. The New York Times even ran a headline reading “We’re Going to Need More Gabrielle Union.” Frankly, after being so open and honest in my writing, I wasn’t sure there was more of me I was ready to share. But life happens with all its plot twists. And new stories demand to be told. This time, I need to be more vulnerable—not so much for me, but anyone who feels alone in what they’re going through.

A lot has changed in four years—I became a mom and I’m raising two amazing girls. My husband retired. My career has expanded so that I have the opportunity to lift up other voices that need to be heard. But the world has also shown us that we have a lot we still have to fight for—as women, as black women, as mothers, as aging women, as human beings, as friends. In You Got Anything Stronger?, I show you how this ever-changing life presents challenges, even as it gives me moments of pure joy. I take you on a girl’s night at Chateau Marmont, and I also talk to Isis, my character from Bring It On. For the first time, I truly open up about my surrogacy journey and the birth of Kaavia James Union Wade. And I take on racist institutions and practices in the entertainment industry, asking for equality and real accountability.

You Got Anything Stronger? is me at my most vulnerable. I have recently found true strength in that vulnerability, and I want to share that power with you here, through this book.

We Keep the Dead Close: A Murder at Harvard and a Half Century of Silence

Dive into a true crime narrative of an unsolved 1969 murder at Harvard, of obsession and love for a girl who dreamt of rising among men.
You have to remember, he reminded me, that Harvard is older than the U.S. government. You have to remember because Harvard doesn’t let you forget.

1969: the height of counterculture and the year universities would seek to curb the unruly spectacle of student protest; the winter that Harvard University would begin the tumultuous process of merging with Radcliffe, its all-female sister school; and the year that Jane Britton, an ambitious twenty-three-year-old graduate student in Harvard’s Anthropology Department and daughter of Radcliffe Vice President J. Boyd Britton, would be found bludgeoned to death in her Cambridge, Massachusetts apartment.   Forty years later, Becky Cooper a curious undergrad, will hear the first whispers of the story. In the first telling the body was nameless. The story was this: a Harvard student had had an affair with her professor, and the professor had murdered her in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology because she’d threatened to talk about the affair. Though the rumor proves false, the story that unfolds, one that Cooper will follow for ten years, is even more complex: a tale of gender inequality in academia, a ‘cowboy culture’ among empowered male elites, the silencing effect of institutions, and our compulsion to rewrite the stories of female victims.

We Keep the Dead Close is a memoir of mirrors, misogyny, and murder. It is at once a rumination on the violence and oppression that rules our revered institutions, a ghost story reflecting one young woman’s past onto another’s present, and a love story for a girl who was lost to history.

Flowers for the Sea

We are a people who do not forget.

Survivors from a flooded kingdom struggle alone on an ark. Resources are scant, and ravenous beasts circle. Their fangs are sharp.

Among the refugees is Iraxi: ostracized, despised, and a commoner who refused a prince, she’s pregnant with a child that might be more than human. Her fate may be darker and more powerful than she can imagine.

Zin E. Rocklyn’s extraordinary debut is a lush, gothic fantasy about the prices we pay and the vengeance we seek.

But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.

To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

Then on a midnight stroll home, Zo spots what seems to be a new Halloween decoration propped up outside the Happy Camper. What she finds is not a mannequin but a dead Marianne, her lifeless body dressed in traditional witch’s garb. But why would someone send this good witch back to the spirit world permanently?

Soon Zo realizes that plenty of folks have motives for murdering Marianne. What’s worse, nosy TV newsman Justin Castle plans to broadcast a report associating Marianne’s murder with the Happy Camper. Zo calls on her partner in sleuthing, local forest ranger Max Harrington, to help her find the culprit before Justin’s report airs. Otherwise Zo’s business just might go bust. But to catch this killer, Zo will have to risk much more than just her reputation . . .

Midnight in Everwood

There’s nothing Marietta Stelle loves more than ballet, but after Christmas, her dreams will be over as she is obligated to take her place in Edwardian society. While she is chafing against such suffocating traditions, a mysterious man purchases the neighbouring townhouse. When Drosselmeier constructs an elaborate set for Marietta’s final ballet performance, she discovers it carries a magic all of its own. On the stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, she is transported to a snowy forest, where she encounters danger at every turn: ice giants, shadow goblins and the shrieking mist all lurk amidst the firs and frozen waterfalls and ice cliffs. After being rescued by the butterscotch-eyed captain of the king’s guard, she is escorted to the frozen sugar palace. At once, Marietta is enchanted by this glittering world of glamorous gowns, gingerbread houses, miniature reindeer and the most delicious confectionary.

But all is not as it seems and Marietta is soon trapped in the sumptuous palace by the sadistic King Gelum, who claims her as his own. She is confined to a gilded prison with his other pets; Dellara, whose words are as sharp as her teeth, and Pirlipata, a princess from another land. Marietta must forge an alliance with the two women to carve a way free from this sugar-coated but treacherous world and back home to follow her dreams. Yet in a hedonistic world brimming with rebellion and a forbidden romance that risks everything, such a path will never be easy.

The Christmas Dress

When hopeful fashionista Meg Julliard must return to her hometown of Chicago to manage her late father’s apartment building, she thinks her dreams of making it in the fashion business are over. Add in her father’s eclectic roster of tenants who all need Meg’s attention (ASAP!), a host of building related disasters, and a handsome handyman she keeps embarrassing herself in front of, and this has all the makings for the worst Christmas she’s ever had.

Ellie Wade, one of the building’s longtime residents, is also not feeling the Christmas Joy this year. She is preparing to move into a nursing home (reluctantly), and is in the process of sorting through her belongings to downsize. Every corner of her apartment holds memories, some good, some bad. But there’s one dress she hesitates to pack up as it represents both the best and worst night of her life.

Ellie and Meg strike up an unlikely friendship and the story of Ellie’s dress comes out. Ellie gifts the gorgeous dress to Meg, hoping that it will bring her more luck, on the condition that she wear it to the building’s Christmas party.

The dress magically fits, and while it eventually leads to the best night of Meg’s life, it also acts as inspiration for Meg to follow a life-long dream of her own, a dream that will help save the crumbling Parkview West, and restore it to its former glory, and keep it as a safe home for all of the current tenants.

The dress and the magic of the holiday season helps both Meg and Ellie find their own happy endings.

Estimated Total of Box: $106.98!

Verdict: Damn this was an amazing box! I loved every single item in the box and I loved how well put together it was. There was a good mix of popular and lesser known items and I love that FaeCrate supports smaller authors with the free ebook download. ALL of the items were exclusive to the box and that makes me so happy as a customer. The spoiler card also includes a TBR that goes along with the book as well. I thought this was such a good box that I instantly decided to sub to it when subs reopened! The only issue I had was that I feared I missed crediting people who helped design the items or whose shops those came from, but I feel that a lot of these were made by the fabulous ladies who run the box. Overall: fabulous box and they’ve earned a customer for LIFE.

When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding. • Monthly Pin
    • No value… probably $.50?

Estimated Total of Box: $68.57

Verdict: I really liked this box with the exception of the print, the tea strainer, and the tea. The print because I just didn’t think it was anything special from the thousands of other Harry Potter merch we have access to, and the tea stuff because I don’t drink it. I’ll probably trade for it or give it away for readathons or other things. And I didn’t enjoy the pin as well. It really cuts off the theme pic in a bad place and it looks awkward. Other than that I liked that this box had two books and I like the socks and clutch!

It’s that time of the month again! Time for another Enchanted Book Box unboxing! This month’s theme was Survival and it focused on Dystopians which is my favorite book genre!

The first items from the box are this room spray from Belle and Co Candle Makers, a candle from Novel Heartbeat, and some bath salts from The Soap Librarian. The room spray from Belle and Co is called Anti-Virus and smells of woody embers and spice. Bell and Co have an app on their website where you can make your own room spray for 9 USD. The candle from Novel Heartbeat is in the scent of AIDAN from our favorite mass murdering AI in Illuminae. It smells of strawberry shortcake and the two ounce retails for about 3.50 USD. The bath salts from The Soap Librarian are in the scent Green Apple and they have dried apples in them. Her bath salts retail for 14 USD.

The next group of items from the box include the info card art, two bookmarks from Book Coyote Designs, and a HUnger Games inspired pouch. The pouch comes from an unknown origin but should retail for about 3 USD if Kailey printed the design on the bag herself. The bookmarks are custom made from Book Coyote Designs. Her bookmarks retail for 2.80 USD each. And the artwork is from Johny Fox Art.

Lastly, we have a tattoo from Bookmark’d Tattoos and the book! Based on the size, the tattoo would probably retail at 4.25 and Katie makes such cute bookmarks! She and Kailey worked together to replicate something from the book in tatoo form, so you can definitely read this book and apply your tattoo on at the same time. Even if you didn’t get this box, you should definitely go check them out and grab one for your friends as a cute stocking stuffer! The book for this month was This Mortal Coil! The book came with a signed bookplate and a letter from the author. Here is a blurb about the book:

In this gripping debut novel, seventeen-year-old Cat must use her gene-hacking skills to decode her late father’s message concealing a vaccine to a horrifying plague.

Catarina Agatta is a hacker. She can cripple mainframes and crash through firewalls, but that’s not what makes her special. In Cat’s world, people are implanted with technology to recode their DNA, allowing them to change their bodies in any way they want. And Cat happens to be a gene-hacking genius.

That’s no surprise, since Cat’s father is Dr. Lachlan Agatta, a legendary geneticist who may be the last hope for defeating a plague that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But during the outbreak, Lachlan was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called Cartaxus, leaving Cat to survive the last two years on her own.

When a Cartaxus soldier, Cole, arrives with news that her father has been killed, Cat’s instincts tell her it’s just another Cartaxus lie. But Cole also brings a message: before Lachlan died, he managed to create a vaccine, and Cole needs Cat’s help to release it and save the human race.

Now Cat must decide who she can trust: The soldier with secrets of his own? The father who made her promise to hide from Cartaxus at all costs? In a world where nature itself can be rewritten, how much can she even trust herself? – Amazon.com

The book is retailing on Amazon for 11.62 USD and I’m definitely excited to read this book for the Hot Mess Book Club!

Estimated Price of the Box: 50.97 USD!

Verdict: Kailey did amazingly well with this month’s box and I’m so excited to see what happens in the future. This book went perfectly with the theme and all of the items are useful and I’m excited to use them!! So happy with this box! Kailey does have some November boxes left and January boxes are going to start soon! Be sure to grab your boxes now!

November 2017 – Shelf Love Crate!

Rating: 4/5

Price: 29.99 USD with 7.99 USD shipping for a one-time box. Subscribing month-to-month will be $29.99, a three month will be $86.97, and a six month will be #167.94.

Products: A newly released fantasy or sci-fi book and four or more bookish items.

Ships To: USA and internationally.

Hello everyone! For the month of November I ordered the ShelfLoveCrate box’s Fight the Power box. This is what the box included:

The first few items in the box were this pouch. The lettering was by Little Inklings Designs and the quote is from the Shatter Me series. Since I’m unsure of how to price this, I’ll just estimate the price of the pouch which runs about 3 USD. The mockingjay pin is about 5 USD and I love it so much. Another item is the Dumbledore’s Army iron-on patch. I found an identical one on Patch Stock for 3 USD each. The last item in the picture is a gorgeous postcard with a superhero on it. I’m unsure of where Shelflove gets their artwork made from, but it’s gorgeous to look at.

Another two items from the box was this candle from Icey Designs and a full sized Pop Funko. The candle is called Once Upon a Cyborg and it’s from the Lunar Chronicles series. The company usually makes about 7 ounce sized candles and they run 18 USD. A little math makes me certain that the two ounce that was included in the box runs about $5.20. The Pop Funko is of Eleven from Season 2. This usually runs about 10 USD. Because some of the boxes came dented the company is offering replacements. Just make sure to email them to get a shipping label and they’ll send you a replacement once they receive the dented one!

Lastly there was the book and some inserts. The inserts were for the new Shelf Love Reads box which debuts in January and a bookmark the company made with a quote from the book. The book is Renegades from Marissa Meyers! Here’s a blurb of the book:

Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies―humans with extraordinary abilities―who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice―and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to the villains who have the power to end them both. – Amazon.com

The book is worth 10.99 USD on Amazon! Go check it out because this is a current read for me and I am LOVING it!

Estimated Price of Box: 37.19 without the pricing of the postcard artwork and the lettering from Little Inklings Designs.

Verdict: I thought this box did good with keeping to the overall theme and I feel that this box was worth the money you use to purchase it with. I was a little saddened to see the pop funko box come dented, I didn’t like that the design for the November box was not included in the box but the December box was instead, and I think that maybe including a lunar chronicles candle was a bit of a stretch in my opinion, BUT I did enjoy the patch which I want to iron onto one of my totes. I did also enjoy my mockingjay pin and I absolutely LOVED the canvas tote. Definitely a box you need to watch out for and an excellent alternative to OwlCrate if you’re not feeling it one month. Definitely check out their Shelf Love Reads box as well and tell me down below if I should buy a box to try it out and review it as well!

September 2017 – Biblio Book Box from Becca’s Little Boutique

Rating: 5/5

Price: $21.60 USD plus tax. This company is stationed in Canada so shipping might be extra depending on where you live.

Ships: Worldwide!

I recently met this wonderful person called Becca through her shop that sells not only amazing bookmarks, candles, and other works, but also blind dates with books. I eventually found out Becca also has a subscription box and I had to try it out! And boy am I glad I did! I loved this cute box!  This book does not come with an info card since all of the items were made by Becca herself… except for the book, but how cool would that have been if she made the book as well?! Like the whole thing from writing it to binding it. Anyways, so I will start with the first item I got out of the box which was this very beautiful art print, which is true of any bibliophile. I couldn’t find a similar art print on her page so I can’t give an estimate on what this cost her to make.

This next item is a beautiful bookmark! It’s laminated and it has a beautiful quote from the book that was included in this book box. Bookmarks are available on Becca’s page for $2.28 USD and she has some gorgeous bookmarks you should go check out!

The next item was this tea bag. The tea is called A Wicked Blend and it’s a ripe berry and juicy kiwi tea. The tea smells amazing! There are similar looking tea bags available on Becca’s etsy page available for $4.78 USD.

The next item is this awesome candle! The candle says “For me it was the hibiscus flower” and it has a light smell to it, like a flower would. I would say this candle would be pretty good for people who normally don’t like candle scents. Becca has similar candles available on her etsy page for $4.15 USD.

The last item before the book is this adorably cute piece of jewelry! It’s a chocker I believe (I’ve not tried it on yet because I’ve been waiting to post this review). Becca did inform me that there were different color jewels that people could have gotten in their box and I got the Blue Topaz in my box. Similar chocker available on her Etsy page for $5.81 USD.

Lastly, the book in this box for this month was Wicked Like A Wildfire by Lana Popovic! This beautiful book has been on my to-buy list since I heard about it and I can’t wait to read it! Here’s an excerpt of this book:

Fans of Holly Black and Leigh Bardugo will be bewitched by Lana Popovic’s debut YA fantasy novel about a bargain that binds the fates—and hearts—of twin sisters to a force larger than life.

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family have the unique magical ability or “gleam” to manipulate beauty. Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, while Malina interprets moods as music. But their mother has strict rules to keep their gifts a secret, even in their secluded sea-side town. Iris and Malina are not allowed to share their magic with anyone, and above all, they are forbidden from falling in love.

But when their mother is mysteriously attacked, the sisters will have to unearth the truth behind the quiet lives their mother has built for them. They will discover a wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find that the very magic that bonds them together is destined to tear them apart forever?

Wicked Like a Wildfire is the first in a two-book series. Readers will be rapt with anticipation for the sequel. – Amazon.com

This book looks and sounds amazing! It’s available for $12.59 USD on Amazon.

Verdict: I think this book box was absolutely amazing! I loved every item in the box and I think Becca did amazing making all of these items and making them themed to match the book! And all of the items in the box besides the art print which I could not find a price for was worth $29.61, so you are definitely getting a good deal on her other items if you get one of her beautiful boxes! I believe she still has some October boxes available so be sure to grab yours today!
