Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Dayna Walsh is struggling to cope with her somatic OCD; the aftermath of being outed as bisexual in her conservative Irish town; and the return of her long-absent mother, who barely seems like a parent. But all that really matters to her is ascending and finally, finally becoming a full witch-plans that are complicated when another coven, rumored to have a sordid history with black magic, arrives in town with premonitions of death. Dayna immediately finds herself at odds with the bewitchingly frustrating Meiner King, the granddaughter of their coven leader.

And then a witch turns up murdered at a local sacred site, along with the blood symbol of the Butcher of Manchester-an infamous serial killer whose trail has long gone cold. The killer’s motives are enmeshed in a complex web of witches and gods, and Dayna and Meiner soon find themselves at the center of it all. If they don’t stop the Butcher, one of them will be next.

With razor-sharp prose and achingly real characters, E. Latimer crafts a sweeping, mesmerizing story of dark magic and brutal mythology set against a backdrop of contemporary Ireland that’s impossible to put down.

Review: I really liked this book for the most part. The book did well to have excellent LGBT representation, and it was based on Celtic folklore. The setting was well detailed and the family dynamics were amazing!

However, there are 5 POVs and it was a lot to take in. The book was hard to get into and it was hard to connect with the characters. The book almost felt forced to tell a story.

Verdict: It was a good book, but not for me.

Synopsis: Everyone in Devil’s Lake knows the three golden Malloy sisters—but one of them is keeping a secret that will turn their little world inside out….

No one knows exactly what happened to Kit in the woods that night—all they have are a constellation of facts: icy blue lips and fingers cold to the touch, a lacy bra, an abandoned pick-up truck with keys still in the ignition. Still, Tessa, even in her fog of grief, is certain that her sister’s killer wasn’t Boyd, the boy next door whom they’ve all loved in their own way. There are too many details that don’t add up, too many secrets still tucked away.

But no matter how fiercely she searches for answers, at the core of that complicated night is a truth that’s heartbreakingly simple.

Told in lush, haunting prose, Frozen Beauty is a story of the intoxicating power of first love, the deep bonds of sisterhood, and a shocking death that will forever change the living.

Review: I thought this story was haunting and eerie. The book did well to focus on the two remaining sisters and the aftermath of their sister’s death. The character development was well done, the setting was well written.

However, I do feel like the book was a bit weird in the dialogue area and in how the characters interacted with each other. I also felt like the book was too slow. It also felt like everyone had a whole ton of issues and it was a bit too much for me.

Verdict: It was a great book regardless! Definitely recommend.

Synopsis: When Amaya rescues a mysterious stranger from drowning, she fears her rash actions have earned her a longer sentence on the debtor ship where she’s been held captive for years. Instead, the man she saved offers her unimaginable riches and a new identity, setting Amaya on a perilous course through the coastal city-state of Moray, where old-world opulence and desperate gamblers collide.

Amaya wants one thing: revenge against the man who ruined her family and stole the life she once had. But the more entangled she becomes in this game of deception—and as her path intertwines with the son of the man she’s plotting to bring down—the more she uncovers about the truth of her past. And the more she realizes she must trust no one…

Packed with high-stakes adventure, romance, and dueling identities, this gender-swapped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is the first novel in an epic YA fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo.

Review: So I’ve never read The Count of Monte Cristo and as of right now I don’t have the desire but DANG I was in a mood to read it while I was reading this book. This book was highly imaginative and it set the sails high (get it? Get it?… okay fine). I loved the pirate setting and I loved how fierce the main character was. She wasn’t like other girls (no seriously, not a meme this time), she was already self assured in her own body and identity, she didn’t need to discover who she truly was on the inside… just what the heck happened to her a long long time ago. I also liked how the book didn’t shy away from hard topics. The characters were all really well developed and the world building was absolutely amazing. And all jokes aside, while the book isn’t strictly a pirate book, it does have a lot of high seas elements in it that it did satisfy my need for more pirates. I even listened to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack while reading this book!

The only downside I had of the book is that some of the sections are a bit slower, as the POV switches between two characters, and all of the names and such can be a bit confusing at times.

Verdict: I highly recommend this swashbuckling read! Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates life for me!

Review: I read this book in 4 hours and I have to say it’s one of the most imaginative and best alagorical works of sci-fi I’ve ever read in my life. The book did amazing to draw the connection between the world and the writing was amazing. I loved to have a realistic OCD rep in this book as well. I highly recommend this book.

My only complaints are that the fight scenes went a bit fast, the pacing is extremely fast paced, and the character development could have been better with some of the background characters. Other than those I absolutely loved this book!

But with the winter solstice drawing near, they must confront the truth beneath the glimmering ice, as lines between friend, foe, and lover vanish like snowflakes on a flame.

Review: Holy cow this book is so good. It’s full of rich analysis and parallels to the issues that today’s women and girls face. The book has amazing character development and touching yet realistic sibling relationship too. The writing is truly amazing and this book, for me, was a great improvement from the first one. The author is definitely one to watch for as she grows in her craft.

My only little nitpick issues are that the pacing was off in places and the world building could have been a bit better. That’s it for me! Truly a wonderful book.

Verdict: definitely recommend.

Author: Garth Nix

Book Series: Standalone

Rating: 3/5

Publication Date: October 1, 2019

Recommended Age: 17+ (death, mutations, plague, violence, gore)

Genre: Fantasy

Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Synopsis: More than a century has passed since Liliath crept into the empty sarcophagus of Saint Marguerite, fleeing the Fall of Ystara. But she emerges from her magical sleep still beautiful, looking no more than nineteen, and once again renews her single-minded quest to be united with her lover, Palleniel, the archangel of Ystara.

A seemingly impossible quest, but Liliath is one of the greatest practitioners of angelic magic to have ever lived, summoning angels and forcing them to do her bidding.

Liliath knew that most of the inhabitants of Ystara died from the Ash Blood plague or were transformed into beastlings, and she herself led the survivors who fled into neighboring Sarance. Now she learns that angels shun the Ystaran’s descendants. If they are touched by angelic magic, their blood will turn to ash. They are known as Refusers, and can only live the most lowly lives.

But Liliath cares nothing for the descendants of her people, save how they can serve her. It is four young Sarancians who hold her interest: Simeon, a studious doctor-in-training; Henri, a dedicated fortune hunter; Agnez, an adventurous musketeer cadet; and Dorotea, an icon-maker and scholar of angelic magic. They are the key to her quest.

The four feel a strange kinship from the moment they meet, but do not know why, or suspect their importance. All become pawns in Liliath’s grand scheme to fulfill her destiny and be united with the love of her life. No matter the cost to everyone else. . .

Review: For the most part I think this book is really interesting. It’s definitely a different narrative than what you might read or expect from Garth Nix and it’s highly imaginative. I think a lot of high fantasy lovers will like this book.

However, I felt like the book was really weirdly wrote. The book just jumps out of the hate without explanation and it’s really hard for the reader to connect with the book and characters if you don’t know what’s going on. I also felt Lilith was an unlikable character and it made me not connect with her.

Verdict: It wasn’t the book for me but it might be for you!

Synopsis: In the city of Craewick, memories reign. The power-obsessed ruler of the city, Madame, has cultivated a society in which memories are currency, citizens are divided by ability, and Gifted individuals can take memories from others through touch as they please.Seventeen-year-old Etta Lark is desperate to live outside of the corrupt culture, but grapples with the guilt of an accident that has left her mother bedridden in the city’s asylum. When Madame threatens to put her mother up for auction, a Craewick practice in which a “criminal’s” memories are sold to the highest bidder before being killed, Etta will do whatever it takes to save her. Even if it means rejoining the Shadows, the rebel group she swore off in the wake of the accident years earlier. To prove her allegiance to the Shadows and rescue her mother, Etta must steal a memorized map of the Maze, a formidable prison created by the bloodthirsty ruler of a neighboring Realm. So she sets out on a journey in which she faces startling attacks, unexpected romance, and, above all, her own past in order to set things right in her world.

Review: I really loved the idea for this story and I thought that the premise behind it is great. I liked the world building and I liked the writing, it was smooth and easy to read.

However, I felt like this book was really too slow for me. The pacing is super slow and I got really distracted while reading it. I felt that the book would have been better without the romance aspect and there were a couple of mistakes with a character being in two places at once.

Verdict: A good concept but bad exposition for me.

Fans of Nic Stone and Elizabeth Acevedo will eagerly anticipate Torrey. On the day Torrey officially becomes a college freshman, he gets a call that might force him to drop out before he’s even made it through orientation: the bee farm his beloved uncle Miles left him after his tragic death is being foreclosed on.Torrey would love nothing more than to leave behind the family and neighborhood that’s bleeding him dry. But he still feels compelled to care for the project of his uncle’s heart. As the farm heads for auction, Torrey precariously balances choosing a major and texting Gabriel—the first boy he ever kissed—with the fight to stop his uncle’s legacy from being demolished. But as notice letters pile up and lawyers appear at his dorm, dividing himself between family and future becomes impossible unless he sacrifices a part of himself.Review:I absolutely loved this book! It was damn cute and so unapologetic. I loved the writing, I loved the character development, I loved how the main character had mostly female help. Also I loved how the romance was helpful and not hindering to the main character and how it helped the main character grow instead of delay it.My only complaint is that sometimes the pacing is a bit slow and I think I could have used a bit more world building but that’s just for my personal taste.Verdict: This was a truly magnificent book and I can’t recommend it enough!

But going rogue means she has no one to watch her back as she delves into the horrors she uncovers. Meanwhile, her former teammates have been ordered to bring her down. Jessie must face danger from all sides if she’s to complete her mission—and survive.Review: Holy crap this book was fantastic! Like Kim Possible but more awesome and way more adult. The book does amazing at character development and building relationships between the characters instead of just relying on history. The book has a solid romance and I engulfed it in one sitting! My only issue is that this is for much more mature audiences and it discusses things that are horrific in real life. The book feels like an adult novel, but I don’t think that should deter anyone, especially teens, from reading this.Verdict: Definitely check this one out!BOOK INFORMATIONThe Athena Protocolby Shamim Sarif
